MISSION STATEMENT
The Society is committed to improving the health and well-being of older persons. It is a non-profit and autonomous organisation for physicians working with, and dedicated to the provision of quality healthcare for, older persons. The Society aims to provide leadership for professionals and aids efforts in developing, implementing and advocating programs in patient care, research, professional education, public policy and public information for the Maltese islands.
HISTORY
The Geriatric Medicine Society of Malta was officially launched during 2005 with the first election for the committee being held in 2006. The members elected on the first committee were Dr. A. Fiorini, Dr. R. Fiorentino, Dr. C. Spiteri, Dr. B. Farrugia and Dr. M. A. Vassallo. The election for the committee is held every three years and ordinary members only are eligible to stand for election.
Since its inception the Society has been very active. The GMSM is a member of the European Union Geriatric Medicine Society, EUGMS, and the Geriatric Medicine Section of the European Union of Medical Specialists, UEMS-GMS. The Society is also represented on the Specialist Accreditation Committee.

ACTIVITIES
The Society’s work on the SAC includes:
- Drawing up the training program for Geriatric Medicine
- Giving advice on accreditation applications for Geriatric Medicine
As members of the UEMS-GMS and EUGMS representatives from the Society have attended several board meetings which are held bi-annually by the UEMS-GMS and the EUGMS. The Society was given the task by the UEMS-GMS to organise the Spring Meeting for 2008. This was very successful with the attendance of 20 delegates from several EU countries. During the meeting the definition of Geriatric Medicine and the Geriatric Patient were agreed upon.
To celebrate the first 10 years of the Society, a Geriatric Medicine Society Conference was organized on the 8th of May 2015 entitled: Optimising Care of the Older Person. The conference was well attended with over 400 delegates. The success of this conference augurs well for other conferences in the future.
