European Geriatric Medicine Specialty Exam (EGeMSE)

We are delighted to announce a significant advancement in the field of geriatrics training: the launch of the European Geriatric Medicine Specialty Exam (EGeMSE). The inaugural exam will take place on April 23, 2025.

This exam aims to standardize and elevate the level of knowledge among geriatricians across Europe. It provides specialists with the opportunity to have their expertise in geriatric medicine formally recognized, ensuring that physicians meet the highest standards of clinical competence and medical knowledge, regardless of their training location. This initiative will not only improve patient care by enhancing the quality of services but also promote greater mobility for healthcare professionals, enabling them to practice more easily across national borders within the European Union and beyond.

We want to highlight that this exam is designed to complement and enhance existing national assessments, not to replace them. Participation in the exam is optional and serves as an additional credential to national exams and training requirements. By aligning our efforts, we can collectively advance medical education while preserving the unique strengths of each country’s healthcare system.

The exam is organized in collaboration with the Royal College of Physicians (UK) and follows the UEMS model, similar to the European Board of Gastroenterology & Hepatology Examination and the European Certificate in Nephrology.
