The Society is committed to improving the health and well-being of older persons. It is a non-profit and autonomous organisation for physicians working with, and dedicated to the provision of quality healthcare for, older persons. The Society aims to provide leadership for professionals and aids efforts in developing, implementing and advocating programs in patient care, research, professional education, public policy and public information for the Maltese islands.
The Geriatric Medicine Society of Malta was officially launched during 2005 with the first election for the committee being held in 2006. The members elected on the first committee were Dr. A. Fiorini, Dr. R. Fiorentino, Dr. C. Spiteri, Dr. B. Farrugia and Dr. M. A. Vassallo. As members of the UEMS-GMS and EUGMS representatives from the Society have attended several board meetings which are held bi-annually by the UEMS-GMS and the EUGMS. The Society was given the task by the UEMS-GMS to organise the Spring Meeting for 2008. This was very successful with the attendance of 20 delegates from several EU countries. During the meeting the definition of Geriatric Medicine and the Geriatric Patient were agreed upon.
To celebrate the first 10 years of the Society, a Geriatric Medicine Society Conference was organized on the 8th of May 2015 entitled: Optimising Care of the Older Person. The conference was well attended with over 400 delegates. The success of this conference augurs well for other conferences in the future.
